New Delhi, October 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand at his South Block office to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between India and Canada. The meeting focused on key areas such as trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and overall strategic collaboration.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
During the discussion, PM Modi extended warm greetings to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and expressed eagerness to meet him in the near future. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasized that the visit of Anita Anand would help strengthen the long-standing partnership between the two countries. Both leaders highlighted the importance of continued dialogue to reinforce trust and collaboration.
A joint statement released following the meeting underlined that a roadmap covering several crucial areas had been developed. The two foreign ministers acknowledged the need for a strong partnership during times of global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

Bilateral Trade Milestones
Both nations expressed satisfaction over the growth of bilateral trade, which reached $23.66 billion in 2024. Indian and Canadian companies are increasingly expanding their presence in each other’s markets, boosting mutual economic growth. Recognizing trade as a foundation for economic development, both sides decided to initiate minister-level discussions soon.
The Canada-India CEO Forum will be relaunched to provide recommendations on clean technology, infrastructure development, agri-food innovations, and digital transformation. The forum is scheduled to coincide with a senior business delegation visit in early 2026.
Cooperation on Climate Change
India and Canada agreed to strengthen collaboration in addressing climate change challenges. Key areas include environmental protection, renewable energy development, reducing carbon emissions in heavy industries, and combating plastic pollution. These initiatives are expected to promote sustainable economic growth and create new employment opportunities.
Energy Collaboration
Discussions between the energy ministers of India and Canada are set to resume, focusing on LNG and LPG trade, oil and gas research, clean technology, green hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture, and electric vehicles. Both nations will share best practices in power system management, emission reduction, digitalization, and disaster management.
Joint efforts will also be pursued in global forums such as the G20 to enhance energy efficiency. Canada’s expertise in mining will support India in securing critical minerals. Cooperation on nuclear energy and uranium supply will continue, with the annual critical minerals dialogue scheduled in Toronto in March 2026.

Both countries committed to expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology. Canadian AI firms are expected to participate in the AI Impact Summit in India in February 2026, strengthening innovation and knowledge exchange between the two nations.
Agriculture and Food Security
The India-Canada partnership will prioritize agricultural productivity, trade, and food security. Collaborative efforts aim to increase farmers’ income, enhance sustainable supply chains, improve agri-value chains, ensure nutritional security, and develop climate-resilient agriculture. Energy recovery from agricultural waste and fertilizer production will also be addressed.
Promoting Education, Tourism, and Cultural Exchange
The two countries will work together to promote education, tourism, cultural exchange, and professional mobility to foster better people-to-people connections. New collaborations in higher education and research will include emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, and fintech. Canadian universities are expected to open campuses in India, and the joint higher education working group will be reactivated.
Enhancing Multidimensional Cooperation
High Commissions and Consulates of both countries will strengthen expertise in economic, political, defense, and technology sectors. This will not only boost bilateral trust but also deepen cooperation in global issues, including the strengthening of multilateral institutions.
