Junagadh, GujaratJunagadh RTO : The Junagadh Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken strict action against traffic rule violators over the past five years, suspending 401 driving licenses for offenses such as overspeeding, drunk driving, and reckless driving. Authorities have also issued notices to 410 more drivers, warning them of potential suspension if they continue to violate road safety rules.

RTO Tightens Grip on Traffic Offenders

In recent years, the Junagadh RTO has intensified efforts to improve road safety by cracking down on drivers who repeatedly break traffic laws. According to RTO officials, drivers caught overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, or taking the wrong side of the road are being immediately reported by the traffic police.

Once the traffic police issue a memo, the RTO is informed, and an official hearing is conducted at the RTO office. During this hearing, the driver is given a chance to explain their side before a final decision is made on suspension.

Suspension Period Ranges Up to Six Months

Based on the seriousness of the offense, the RTO has the authority to suspend a driving license for up to six months. In several cases, offenders have faced suspension for three months initially, and if caught driving again during this period, their license is extended to a six-month suspension.

An RTO officer explained that, “We are taking a zero-tolerance approach towards dangerous driving. Over the last five years, 401 licenses have been officially suspended, and 410 notices have been served. Our goal is to make the roads of Junagadh safer for everyone.”

Repeat Offenders Face Stricter Punishment

Authorities have made it clear that anyone found driving a vehicle during their suspension period will face harsher consequences. Such cases are referred again for a fresh hearing, and the suspension is extended to the maximum limit allowed by law.

Additionally, if a suspended driver is caught behind the wheel again, they could face heavy fines or even imprisonment, depending on the severity of the violation.

RTO’s Role in Promoting Safer Roads

The Junagadh RTO’s recent actions align with the broader mission of the Gujarat Transport Department to reduce road accidents and encourage responsible driving. Overspeeding and drunk driving remain two of the top causes of fatal accidents in India. By enforcing license suspensions, the RTO aims to set a strong example for other regions.

Officials also emphasized that education and awareness are just as important as enforcement. The department is considering awareness campaigns to remind motorists that traffic rules are not just legal requirements but essential for saving lives.

Legal Consequences of RTO Action

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, the RTO has full legal authority to suspend or revoke a driving license if a driver is found guilty of offenses such as overspeeding, dangerous driving, or driving under the influence. The maximum penalty includes:

  • Up to six months of license suspension
  • Heavy monetary fines
  • Possible jail time in extreme cases

The law also states that during the suspension period, if the same driver is found operating any vehicle, it constitutes a criminal offense, attracting both fines and imprisonment.

Public Response and Road Safety Outlook

Many residents of Junagadh have welcomed the RTO’s move, saying stricter enforcement is necessary to prevent accidents and save lives. Local traffic experts believe such decisive steps will create fear among habitual offenders and encourage safer driving habits.

With over 400 suspensions in five years, the Junagadh RTO has made a strong statement: road safety is non-negotiable. As traffic continues to increase in urban and rural areas alike, such proactive enforcement by RTO offices across India could become a key factor in building safer roads for all.
