Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day official visit to Bhutan from November 11 to 12, marking his fourth visit to the Himalayan kingdom since 2014. The visit highlights India’s commitment to deepening its long-standing partnership with Bhutan, centered on mutual trust, development cooperation, and cultural unity.

Purpose of the Visit: Deepening Bilateral Friendship

The visit aims to reinforce the special diplomatic and economic relationship between India and Bhutan. Both countries share a legacy of cooperation based on mutual respect, goodwill, and people-to-people connections.
During the trip, PM Modi is scheduled to hold high-level talks with His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. These talks will focus on energy partnerships, trade expansion, regional security, and infrastructure connectivity.

Major Highlight: Inauguration of Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project

One of the key milestones of this visit will be the joint inauguration of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project.
This landmark project symbolizes the growing India-Bhutan collaboration in renewable energy and will play a crucial role in boosting Bhutan’s electricity exports while supporting India’s clean energy goals.
The hydropower cooperation between the two nations has been a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship for decades.

Modi to Attend Global Peace Prayer Festival in Bhutan

Prime Minister Modi will also participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, a spiritual event organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan.
The festival focuses on global peace, harmony, and the upliftment of humanity, aligning perfectly with India and Bhutan’s shared values of compassion and non-violence.
The Prime Minister’s presence at this event reflects his vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

Visit to Tashichho Dzong and Buddha Relics Ceremony

During his stay, PM Modi will visit the Tashichho Dzong Monastery in Thimphu, where the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, brought from India, are being displayed for public veneration.
He will offer prayers and participate in the ceremony, further emphasizing the deep spiritual and cultural bond between the two nations.

Meetings with Bhutan’s Leadership

On the first day, Modi will meet King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for bilateral talks, followed by the hydropower project inauguration and participation in the Fourth King’s birthday celebrations.
On November 12, he will hold discussions with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to explore new areas of cooperation in energy, road and rail connectivity, digital partnership, and development planning.

The two sides are also expected to discuss India’s continued support for Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Development Plan, aimed at achieving inclusive growth and sustainability.
