Jamnagar has witnessed a remarkable initiative in animal welfare with the Karuna Animal Ambulance 1962 program. Over the past eight years, this service has rescued and treated more than 38,000 injured and sick animals and birds, providing immediate medical attention right at the spot and giving countless lives a second chance. This initiative highlights the Gujarat government’s commitment to creating a healthier state and ensuring the welfare of its livestock.
A Successful Eight-Year Journey
Launched on October 6, 2017, by the state government, the Karuna Animal Ambulance 1962 has successfully completed eight years of dedicated service. Operated jointly by EMRI GHS and the Animal Husbandry Department, this ambulance service has become a lifeline for injured and sick animals across Jamnagar. The program ensures that every emergency receives prompt care, reflecting the government’s focus on humane treatment and animal protection.
Extensive Reach Across Species
During this period, the ambulance service has provided medical care to 38,188 animals. The service has treated a diverse range of animals, including 25,555 dogs, 9,105 cows, 7,425 cats, as well as birds like pigeons, parrots, and other species such as goats, crows, rabbits, and even camels. The wide coverage demonstrates the inclusive approach of the program in caring for both domestic and stray animals.

Fully Equipped Ambulances
Every vehicle of the Karuna Animal Ambulance 1962 is fully equipped with all necessary medicines and modern medical tools. A trained veterinary officer and a pilot are always on board to ensure quick and effective treatment. This setup allows the team to respond rapidly to emergencies and provide on-the-spot care to animals in distress, saving lives that might otherwise have been lost.
Celebrating Eight Years of Service
The completion of eight years was celebrated with key personnel, including Dr. Anil Virani, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Chirag Bhanderi from ADIO, veterinary police clinic staff, Dr. Jigarbhai Kane from Karuna, pilot Bhagwanbhai, and coordinators from EMRI Green Health Services and MVDU. The staff honored the dedication and tireless efforts of everyone involved in making this initiative a success, showcasing the spirit of teamwork and compassion.
