Rajkot, Gujarat: Saurashtra University is set to host the prestigious International Conference on Nanostructuring by Ion Beams (ICNIB-2025) from October 7 to 9, 2025. This is the 8th edition of the biennial ICNIB conference series, organized jointly by Saurashtra University and the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi.

The three-day international event will bring together 185 Ph.D. scholars, researchers, and more than 200 scientists from India and abroad to discuss the latest advancements in material science and the applications of ion beam technology. Experts from Germany, Spain, Japan, Israel, Korea, and leading Indian institutions like IITs and DRDO will guide young researchers in exploring the future of nanostructures and semiconductor technologies.

A Proud Moment for Saurashtra University

Speaking about the event, Vice Chancellor Dr. Utpal Joshi expressed pride in hosting this international conference. He said the primary objective of ICNIB-2025 is to provide a common platform for scientists, experts, and young researchers working in the fields of ion-solid interaction and advanced materials research.

The conference series began in 2011 at Allahabad University, Prayagraj, and since then it has been organized at prestigious institutions across India—Rajasthan University/MNIT Jaipur (2013), Devi Ahilyabai University Indore (2017), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (2019), Institute of Physics Bhubaneswar (2021), and UPES Dehradun (2021).

This year, Saurashtra University has the honor of hosting the 8th edition, marking a significant milestone for the institution.

Ion Beam Technology: Advancing Materials Science

The ICNIB-2025 conference will focus on the role of ion beam irradiation in shaping advanced materials. Ion beam technology essentially studies the changes in material properties when charged particles (ions) interact with metals, alloys, polymers, semiconductors, and other materials.

Scientists worldwide use energetic ion beams to modify materials in order to make them more efficient and useful. These applications are crucial in electronics, space exploration, and medical technology.

For example, in space research, ion beam testing allows devices to be evaluated under extreme conditions such as high radiation and high temperatures. Ion beams also help in creating nanostructures and nanomaterials with specific properties.

  • Low-energy ions (KeV level) are used for developing nanoparticles and thin films.
  • Medium-energy ions are applied in implantation processes.
  • High-energy ions (MeV level) are used to design and refine nanostructures for advanced applications.

The theme of ICNIB-2025 is “Synthesis by Ion Beam Irradiation”, with sessions covering diverse topics such as:

  • Ion-induced sputtering and diffusion
  • Formation of nanodots and ripple patterns
  • Nanostructure synthesis and modification
  • Defect engineering
  • Semiconductor device processing
  • Computational material science
