Run for Unity

New Delhi, October 27: Run for Unity: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the people of India to participate wholeheartedly in the upcoming ‘Run for Unity’ on October 31, an annual event dedicated to celebrating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, widely remembered as the Iron Man of India.

In his message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said, “Join the Run for Unity on 31st October and celebrate the spirit of togetherness! Let’s honour Sardar Patel’s vision of a united India.” The call aims to inspire citizens to uphold the values of unity, harmony, and nation-building that Sardar Patel embodied throughout his life.

Remembering the Architect of National Integration

October 31 is observed across India as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas), commemorating Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s immense contribution to India’s unity and integrity. Known as the ‘Iron Man of India’, Patel played a defining role in integrating more than 565 princely states into the Indian Union after independence — a feat that transformed a divided land into a single, united nation.

During the 127th episode of his popular monthly radio program “Mann Ki Baat”, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Patel, calling him one of the greatest visionaries of modern India. “Sardar Patel was among the nation’s most remarkable leaders. His life reflected discipline, determination, and dedication to the country. His role in uniting India remains unparalleled,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also reflected on Patel’s early public service, particularly his tenure as the head of the Ahmedabad Municipality, where Patel introduced reforms in cleanliness, public health, and governance. “He believed that good governance begins with discipline and service to the people,” Modi noted.

Highlighting Patel’s leadership as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Modi said, “We will always remain indebted to him for his invaluable service in shaping India’s democratic foundation and national unity.”

The Prime Minister added that Patel’s legacy continues to inspire every generation to think beyond regional and linguistic barriers and work for a stronger, more united India.

‘Run for Unity’ Events Across the Nation

To mark Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and various state governments are organizing ‘Run for Unity’ events across the country, with major participation expected in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi.

The initiative encourages citizens of all ages — students, professionals, and sportspersons — to come together in symbolic runs promoting the values of national integrity and social harmony. In recent years, millions have joined the Run for Unity, turning it into one of India’s largest community-driven events celebrating patriotism.

The runs are expected to start early in the morning, with participants wearing specially designed T-shirts displaying Patel’s image and the message “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” (One India, Great India). The event will also feature cultural performances and short documentaries highlighting Patel’s life and contributions.

The Enduring Legacy of the Iron Man of India

Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a lawyer by profession and a statesman by spirit. His leadership during India’s independence movement, especially his role in the Kheda and Bardoli Satyagraha, earned him national recognition as a fearless leader who combined practicality with compassion.

After India gained independence in 1947, Patel faced one of the most complex challenges — integrating hundreds of princely states into one nation. Through diplomacy, determination, and strategic vision, he managed to bring all these territories under one flag, preventing India from fragmenting into smaller, unstable kingdoms.

His remarkable achievement earned him the title “Architect of Modern India.” Today, his towering Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat — standing at 182 meters — symbolizes national pride and unity, attracting millions of visitors from India and abroad.

A Call for National Solidarity

Through the Run for Unity, Prime Minister Modi seeks to rekindle the spirit of national solidarity among citizens. The event not only celebrates Patel’s birth anniversary but also reminds people of the importance of collective strength in shaping India’s future.

In his Mann Ki Baat address, Modi emphasized that true unity lies in diversity — in accepting differences, respecting every culture, and standing together for progress. “The best tribute we can pay to Sardar Patel is to keep India united, strong, and harmonious,” he said.

Global Relevance of Patel’s Message

While the Run for Unity is a national event, Patel’s ideals resonate globally. His belief in peace, unity, and good governance continues to inspire leaders worldwide. For Indians living abroad, especially in the US and UK, the event serves as a powerful reminder of their cultural roots and shared responsibility toward a better India.

Indian embassies and community organizations in major cities such as London, New York, and Toronto are also expected to organize symbolic runs and cultural events to mark the occasion.
