India Maritime Week 2025

Mumbai, India-The India Maritime Week 2025 has begun on a high note as the state of Maharashtra announced the signing of 15 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹56,000 crore. These agreements are set to revolutionize the state’s maritime sector, strengthen the blue economy, and create over one lakh employment opportunities.

In the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the agreements were formalized during the inaugural ceremony of India Maritime Week 2025, marking a major step toward India’s maritime transformation.

A Massive Boost to India’s Maritime Vision

Maharashtra’s Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane said the state’s new investment commitments will contribute to a 2–3% rise in GDP and reduce carbon emissions by 25%. The agreements, he noted, are a key step toward positioning Maharashtra as the maritime superpower of India.

“Currently, 95% of India’s trade is carried through sea routes, and Maharashtra’s ports—especially Mumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT)—handle nearly 30% of this trade,” Rane explained. “With these projects, our container handling capacity will rise by 20%, exports and imports will become more efficient, and logistics costs will drop by 15–20%.”

Strategic Partnerships to Power the Blue Economy

The newly signed MoUs span across port expansion, technology development, shipbuilding, and green maritime innovation. They also emphasize skill development and research collaborations with leading institutions.

Key Highlights of the Maharashtra MoUs:

  • Investment Value: ₹56,000 crore
  • Number of MoUs Signed: 15
  • Job Creation: Over 1 lakh, with 40% skilled workforce
  • Carbon Emission Reduction: 25–30%
  • GDP Impact: +2–3% growth

Among the notable collaborations, Maharashtra has entered into three major agreements with IIT Mumbai focused on ship design research, training, and skill development. These partnerships will generate nearly 50,000 new jobs, of which 40% will be in the skilled labor sector, according to Rane.

Green Maritime Revolution: Reducing Emissions and Promoting Sustainability

Environmental sustainability has been made a core theme of India Maritime Week 2025, and Maharashtra’s approach reflects this vision.

“Our agreement with Echandia Marine AB will help develop a marine battery energy system for tugboats, reducing carbon emissions by 30%,” Rane said. “Similarly, our partnership with Candela Technology AB (Sweden) will enable the construction of electric passenger ships and launch a water taxi service connecting the Gateway of India with Navi Mumbai Airport.”

This initiative aims to not only decongest Mumbai’s overburdened roads but also cut pollution and boost marine biodiversity. The Mumbai Port Authority’s collaboration will further enhance water transport infrastructure, making Mumbai a model city for green maritime mobility.

Union Government’s Vision: ₹10 Lakh Crore Maritime Investments

The Union Government has set an ambitious target of attracting ₹10 lakh crore worth of investments during the India Maritime Week 2025, highlighting India’s commitment to transforming its 7,500-km coastline into a hub of sustainable growth and trade.

At the event, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed confidence that Maharashtra’s MoUs will play a major role in achieving the national vision.

“The investment value of ₹56,000 crore underlines Maharashtra’s determination to become the maritime superpower of India,” Fadnavis said. “These agreements cover everything from port modernization and logistics efficiency to creating an ecosystem for innovation and skill development.”

Adani Group, JSW Group, and Global Investors Join Hands

A key highlight of the event was Maharashtra’s collaboration with major industrial groups and foreign technology firms.

Adani Group’s Expansion Plans

The Adani Group signed a major MoU for expanding Dighi Port and developing a large industrial zone around it in coordination with the Central Government. The move is expected to enhance trade capacity, attract manufacturing units, and boost local employment.

JSW Group’s Coastal Commitment

The JSW Group has committed to expanding its Jaigad Port facility, further strengthening Maharashtra’s port network. The state’s 700-km-long coastline is now being positioned as a gateway for integrating with global supply chains, ensuring faster, cost-effective logistics for exporters and importers.

Integrating Ports, Airports, and Logistics for Seamless Transport

Fadnavis revealed that the Adani Group-operated Navi Mumbai Airport will become the first in India to offer a seamless water-air connectivity service.

“Passengers will soon be able to travel directly between the Gateway of India and Navi Mumbai Airport via water taxis,” he said. “This will be a first-of-its-kind multimodal transport system in the country.”

The government also plans to establish a state-of-the-art marina in Mumbai, encouraging water sports, yacht tourism, and recreational boating, making the city a new hotspot for maritime leisure activities.

Skill Development and Centres of Excellence

Another major focus of the MoUs signed during India Maritime Week 2025 is human capital development. Maharashtra is setting up centres of excellence for maritime technology, shipbuilding innovation, and ocean research.

These centers will train the next generation of marine engineers, navigators, and blue economy experts, ensuring that India’s youth become key stakeholders in the country’s ocean-led growth.

Fadnavis reiterated the state’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the Central Government, private companies, and academic institutions to create a future-ready maritime workforce.

Water Transport and Urban Mobility: Mumbai as a Global Model

With Mumbai facing chronic traffic congestion, water transport is being positioned as the city’s next major urban mobility solution. The agreements signed during India Maritime Week 2025 aim to make Mumbai one of the few global metropolises with a fully functional marine transport network.

The upcoming water taxi corridor will reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai by up to 60%, while cutting road congestion and vehicular pollution significantly.

Furthermore, Maharashtra’s collaboration with international marine tech companies will bring electric propulsion systems, AI-based navigation, and smart port logistics to India’s coastline.
