A new era has begun in Gujarat as the state officially added a fresh administrative unit to its map – the new district Tharad. This long-awaited move fulfills the decades-old demand of border residents and brings the total number of districts in the state to 34. The formation of Tharad as a district is expected to make governance easier, bring government services closer to people, and speed up developmental activities in the region.

The inauguration of the district headquarters was held at Tharad. The event was marked by the presence of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and the Minister of Rural Development, Labour, and Employment. Citizens in large numbers gathered to celebrate this historic achievement, underlining the importance of the decision.

Administrative Structure of the New District Tharad

The creation of the new district Tharad has brought with it a revised administrative setup. Four new talukas – Ogad, Dharnidhar, Rah, and Hadad – were added along with existing ones. In total, the district will now comprise 8 talukas, namely:

  • Tharad
  • Vav
  • Suigam
  • Bhabhar
  • Diyodar
  • Lakhani
  • Dhima (new)
  • Rah (new)

The new unit includes 416 villages and 2 municipalities, with a total population of nearly 9.78 lakh people.

To lead the administration, the state government appointed J.S. Prajapati as District Collector, Kartik Jivani as District Development Officer (DDO), and Chintan J. Teraiya as Superintendent of Police (SP). With these appointments, the district has officially started functioning.

Tharad as the Administrative Centre

The headquarters of the new district Tharad is located in Tharad itself. Important offices like the District Collectorate, Superintendent of Police Office, and District Panchayat Office have been set up here. This change will save people from long travels to Palanpur or other parts of Banaskantha for administrative work, ensuring faster access to government services.

Impact on Banaskantha District

The creation of the new district has also changed the boundaries of Banaskantha. Earlier, Banaskantha was one of the largest districts in Gujarat. Now, after the division, it will include 10 talukas – Palanpur, Deesa, Vadgam, Dantivada, Danta, Amirgarh, Dhanera, Kankrej, Ogad, and Hadad.

This restructuring has been welcomed by citizens who feel that local governance will now be more efficient and accessible.

Fulfillment of a Long-Standing Demand

Residents of the border belt have been demanding a separate district for many years. Their main concern was the distance from administrative centers, which caused delays in government services. The official recognition of Tharad as Gujarat’s newest district has brought a sense of pride and relief to thousands of families.

The inauguration was celebrated widely, with cultural programs and gatherings highlighting the enthusiasm of local people.

Importance of the New District

The new district Tharad is strategically important, as it lies close to the international border. Stronger administration here means better infrastructure, disaster management, law and order, and faster development projects.

The government has emphasized that creating smaller, manageable districts helps in improving governance, strengthening rural development programs, and delivering essential services like education, healthcare, and employment schemes more effectively.
